Do you know that the diameter tolerance of your welding wire is a critical factor for welding performance?
It directly impacts arc stability, wire feeding smoothness, and the final quality of your weld. Furthermore, the tolerance standards are not the same for solid and flux-cored wires.
1. Tolerance Range for Solid Welding Wires
The following tolerances are based on the American Welding Society (AWS A5.18/A5.18M:2021) standard, which is widely recognized globally.
| Nominal Diameter (mm) | Permissible Deviation (mm) |
| 0.8, 0.9 | ±0.02 |
| 1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6 | ±0.03 |
| 2.0, 2.4 | ±0.04 |
| 3.2, 4.0 | ±0.05 |

2. Tolerance Range for Flux-Cored Welding Wires
Flux-cored wires are manufactured differently due to the internal flux powder. Consequently, their diameter tolerance is generally slightly wider than that of solid wires, as defined by the AWS A5.20/A5.20M standard.
| Nominal Diameter (mm) | Permissible Deviation (mm) |
| 0.8, 0.9, 1.0, 1.2 | ±0.05 |
| 1.4, 1.6 | ±0.06 |
| 2.0, 2.4 | ±0.08 |
| 3.2, 4.0 | ±0.10 |

At Szeshang, we implement strict quality control checks at every single step of the production process. This meticulous attention to detail ensures that each and every spool of welding wire delivers consistent diameter, superior feedability, and flawless weld results.
