ER5356 Aluminum Welding Wire with Scandium: +40–50 MPa Weld Strength – Real Test Data

Publish Time: 2026-06-23     Origin: Site

Engineers who work with 5xxx series aluminum alloys know the old problem all too well: the weld is often the weakest link in the whole structure.

With standard ER5356 Aluminum filler wire, butt weld tensile strength typically lands somewhere between 240 and 300 MPa. Compare that to 5083‑H321 base metal, which runs around 315 MPa, and the gap is clear. When weld strength lags, you have to go thicker, add weight, and drive up both cost and inefficiency across the project.

Lately, more people in the industry are talking about adding a tiny amount of scandium to ER5356 Aluminum Welding Wire.

Why does scandium make such a difference?

The real change happens during solidification. As the weld pool cools, scandium combines with aluminum to form Al₃Sc precipitates. These do a few important things:

  • Grain refinement – Al₃Sc acts as a nucleation site for fine equiaxed grains in the weld metal. Finer grains mean higher strength and better toughness at the same time.

  • Precipitation strengthening – These Al₃Sc nanoparticles are coherent with the aluminum matrix, which means they pin dislocations very effectively. And they stay stable even at 300–350 °C, unlike magnesium’s solid‑solution strengthening, which tends to fade after welding heat cycles.

  • Very low addition level – Just 0.1–0.4 % is enough to see clear improvements.

What Szeshang Welding's tests showed

We ran a set of controlled comparative tests on 5xxx Al‑Mg alloys. We added different amounts of scandium to the standard ER5356 Aluminum Welding Wire composition, and here's what we measured:

  • +0.1 % Sc → weld tensile strength increased by about 20 MPa

  • +0.2 % Sc → weld tensile strength jumped by 40–50 MPa

That means with 0.2 % scandium, the weld can consistently hit above 320 MPa – already stronger than the 5083 base metal. The weld is no longer the weak spot.

What this means in real engineering terms

That strength boost gives you two direct benefits.

First, the joint efficiency (joint strength / base metal strength) climbs from the usual 0.65–0.70 up to over 0.85. For components that see cyclic loads, that’s a game‑changer.

Second, for the same load, you can safely use thinner gauge material. In weight‑sensitive applications – think aircraft fuel tanks, rocket propellant tanks, high‑speed train bodies, or lightweight car parts – the total weight savings easily outweigh the incremental cost of the scandium‑bearing wire.

Where it’s being used

Scandium‑modified ER5356 is already finding its way into:

  • Aerospace – fuel tanks and rocket structures

  • Rail transit – aluminium car body shells for high‑speed trains

  • Shipbuilding – welded aluminium hull components

  • Automotive lightweighting – high‑performance structural parts

One important note

The standard ER5356 Aluminumn Welding Wire specification does not include scandium. Any wire that contains it is a special modified product, so when you source it, make sure to ask the supplier for the actual composition and the exact scandium content.
