From Auto to Aerospace: How a Small Chinese Factory Broke a 40-Year Monopoly on Welding Wire

In July, a Shandong-based brand program visited Szeshang Welding.

They want to know how can a seven-year-old company that now supplies nearly 70% of China's aluminum welding wire for new-energy vehicles, high-speed trains, and even rocket fuel tanks.

The challenge

Before 2019, China relied on imports for almost 100% of high-end aluminum welding wire. State-owned enterprises and carmakers had little faith in domestic alternatives—welds were porous, slaggy, and failed quality tests.

The gamble
Founder Shang Jinsheng, a veteran in the welding industry, bet everything on R&D. His small firm poured 8% of annual sales—nearly ¥10 million—into developing proprietary alloys, with no guarantee of success. After five years of trial-and-error, working with top universities, we finally cracked the formula in 2023.

The breakthrough
Winning over giants like BYD wasn't easy. we offered free trials, solved a “long-feed clogging” issue that rivals overlooked, and delivered within three days from local warehouses—at a lower pricecomparing with International brand. Within months, we secured contracts with BYD, Chery, FAW, and Audi.

Beyond cars
Today, Our product line includes:

• ER5356 Aluminum alloy Welding wire – for EV battery trays and frames

• ER4043 Aluminum Welding wire – for bicycle frames (used by Giant and half of Tianjin's bike makers)

• Aluminum-core wire – for Tesla and BYD cooling systems

• 2319 copper-aluminum wire – for rocket solid-fuel tank welding

Our ultra-low-temperature wire works at -100°C and has gone to the Antarctic with Chinese research teams. It will soon be used in hydropower turbines on the Yarlung Tsangpo River.

“We've replaced imports in autos,” says Shang. “Now we're targeting 7-series aviation aluminum—wings and tails for domestic jets. That's the next battleground.”

His advice to other SMEs: “Look up. Don't be drowned out by market noise. The deeper the niche, the greater the opportunity.”
