ER309L
SZESHANG
ER309L is a low-carbon, austenitic stainless steel filler metal. The "ER" stands for Electrode or Rod, "309" is the AWS classification for its specific chemical composition, the "L" denotes it has Low carbon content (typically ≤ 0.03%).
Application
Dissimilar Steel Welding (The Most Common Use area):
Welding Stainless Steel (304, 316) to Mild or Low-Alloy Steel. This is its classic application (e.g., attaching stainless fittings to a carbon steel pipe, welding a stainless flange to a carbon steel vessel).
Welding 304L to 316L where a higher alloy filler is acceptable.
Joining various dissimilar stainless grades.
Overlay Cladding / Hardfacing:
Used to deposit a corrosion-resistant stainless steel layer onto a carbon or low-alloy steel base. This provides the corrosion resistance of stainless at a fraction of the cost of a solid stainless component (common in chemical processing vessels, pulp and paper digesters).
Welding Similar 309/309S Base Metals:
For joining components made of 309 or 309S stainless steel, which are used for high-temperature applications.
Repair Welding:
Useful for repairing castings of unknown composition or where dilution is a concern.
